This module is designed to help you think of your organic farm as a startup business. How do you identify a burning consumer need that your organic farm business is uniquely suited to fulfill? How do you explain your organic farm business concept in less than 60 seconds to someone who knows next to nothing about agriculture?

These are some of the questions you should be able to answer at the end of this module.

Specifically, lessons to be covered in this module will include:

• Choosing what to produce (choosing your niche)
• Location and finding land
• Sourcing needed equipment and supplies
• Developing a business model and business plan
• Start-Up Budgeting and Funding

The module provides an introduction to sustainable soil fertility management and organic agriculture approach to
soil fertility management. Specifically, you will learn about:

• Relevance of the different soil components for soil fertility.
• Prevention of soil erosion and management of soil organic matter
• Tools for organic soil fertility management.

The module will point out the relevance of investing in the long-term productivity of the farm to minimize risks and ensure the farm's sustainability.

At the end of this module, you will be able to develop a soil fertility plan for your farm.

The module describes the general approach of organic farming to pest, disease and weed management, and presents the different tools to manage pests, diseases and weeds in crops and in storage.

You will learn how to recognize, identify, manage and prevent crop stressors like pests, insects, and weeds.

One of the outcomes of this module is the development of an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan for your farm.

The module will work you through production of organic inputs that could enhance profitability. Some of the lessons to be covered are:

• Composting and compost making
• Black soldier flies farming for livestock
• Biopesticides production
• Manure tea production

The module will introduce you to the entrepreneurial understanding of organic farm management.

You will learn how to interpret, develop and track a realistic, yet profitable budget for your organic farm operations.

The module will provide information on essential activities such as regular planning and record keeping.

A major outcome of this module is the development of enterprise budget for your organic farm operations.

In this module, you will learn organic market diversification and how to carve your niche. You will develop effective business strategies to identify, produce, package, brand and distribute sellable organic products to your target audience at both local and global level.

In this module, you will learn organic farm record-keeping tactics, requirements, and legal process to complete an organic certification application and become a certified organic farm.

The module will also explain the key challenges related to conversion to organic farming.

A major outcome of this module is the development of Organic System Plan for your organic farm operations.
